We are Skytree

Skytree enables a transition to a world with cleaner Air for everyone. We do this by developing and deploying smart technology that captures atmospheric carbon dioxide, enabling its use or storage to combat climate change and aid society and businesses around the world.

Born out of the European Space Agency (ESA), we are a global team of highly talented scientists, engineers and business professionals, supported by an experienced management team. Our working culture is based on a dynamic and smart approach to business with an open and understanding attitude to others and a desire to expand the boundaries of what is possible.

As we enter a new phase of growth, we are looking for a driven PLC Software Engineer to go on this journey with us.

As an PLC Software Engineer at Skytree, you will develop (automated) control and electrical systems for the Skytree CO2 capture machines. You will collaborate with internal and external cross-functional teams, conduct analysis, and ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations to deliver innovative CO2 capture machines.

You can leverage your expertise to support our long-term product roadmap, whilst having a hands-on aproach to programming and testing our machinery, including at our Almere assembly site. Some travel may be required, once our solutions get deployed and commissioned internationally. We expect most of the work to take place at our Amsterdam office. We currently use Siemens S7 PLC’s / Step 7 (TIA Portal).

Your experience will help create reliable and efficient electrical / control systems that meet the requirements of our customers and contribute to the overall success of Skytree’s CO2 capture machines.

  • Integrating field devices and subsystems via Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, Profinet, and OPC UA (server and client).

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, software, cloud) to deliver reliable and maintainable control solutions.

  • Supporting simulation and modeling for system validation, performance testing, and optimization.

  • Preparing clear technical documentation such as user operating manual document, test reports etc.

  • Driving continuous improvement in automation architecture, software practices, and commissioning workflows.

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.

  • 4+ years of experience developing PLC software for complex industrial equipment or machinery.

  • Proven experience with Siemens PLC platforms such as TIA Portal, WinCC, and WinCC Unified.

  • Proficient in FBD, S7 Graph, SCL, and WinCC scripting.

  • Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols such as:

    • Modbus TCP

    • Modbus RTU

    • Profinet

    • OPC UA (server and client), etc.

  • Knowledge of SCADA/HMI systems, field integration, and industrial networking best practices.

  • Familiarity with functional safety and automation standards (e.g., ISO 13849, IEC 62061).

  • Proactive, hands-on, and self-motivated engineer with a strong sense of ownership.

  • Based in The Netherlands, or willing to relocate.

  • Open to occasional international travel for commissioning or supplier collaboration.

What you can expect

Apart from working with great colleagues and a competitive package, you can also expect:

  • A unique start-up environment offering organic professional and personal growth at one of the most innovative cleantech companies in Amsterdam!

  • A diverse (38+ nationalities) and fun team to work with.

  • Travel cost reimbursement (choose from an NS business card, lease bike, or 23ct p/km travel allowance).

  • Recharge with 25 vacation days, plus a little extra when life throws something special your way.
